Working and treatment of Ofloxacin – Floxin
Ofloxacin belongs to a class of broad spectrum antibiotics called the quinolones. This works by entering the bacterial cell and inhibiting a chemical called DNA-gyrase which is involved in the generic material DNA. This prevents the bacteria from reproducing and thus stopping their growth. Ofloxacin is very effective against several types of bacteria which tend to be resistant against other antibiotics.

Ofloxacin is used in the treatment of pneumonia and bronchitis caused by Haemophilus influenza and streptococcus pneumonia. This drug is also used to treat skin infections caused by staphylococcus aurous, and streptococcus pyogenes bacteria. Ofloxacin is used in treating sexually transmitted diseases like gonorrhea and Chlamydia but this drug is not effective against syphilis. This is often used in the treatment of urinary infections and prostate infections caused by E.Coli.

Some strains of streptococcus bacteria, enterococcus bacteria and anaerobic bacteria are resistant to Ofloxacin. Ofloxacin taken together with theophylline can cause elevated blood levels of theophylline. Minerals, vitamins and antacids with iron block the absorption of Ofloxacin and they should not be taken together. A few tests must be conducted before the prescription of this drug. Being an antibiotic you must eat a good healthy diet while on this medication. Ask the doctor what can be taken and what is best avoided.
